Department of Orthopaedics

Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences at Puttaparthi (SSSIHMS-PG), a part of the group of four major medical institutions rendering highest quality tertiary care medical service free of cost to one and all, was established by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and maintained by Sri Sathya Sai Medical Trust. These institutions are equipped with modern state of the art equipment.

Orthopaedics is a distinct discipline of medical sciences. It evolved from a simple treatise on correction and prevention of deformities in children to the status of a specialty in Medical Science. Tremendous developments have happened in this field in both practice and scope by introduction of newer tools for diagnosis, usage of grafts, prosthesis, implants and appliances. Correction of deformities and diseases of bones and joints by surgical methods have made orthopaedics a dynamic branch of science.

Orthopaedics in our context made a humble beginning in the general hospital at Puttaparthi with a basic physiotherapy unit. It was a facility to render basic emergency care. The full fledged Orthopaedic department commenced functioning at SSSIHMS-PG from July 11, 2006. The goal of the department is to render efficient care in Orthopaedic surgery, provide post graduate training in orthopaedics and to train young budding Orthopaedic surgeons. The facility is run by well trained infrastructural staff at all levels. This is thus a boon to the rural population who can never afford to get state of the art orthopaedic treatment, completely free of charge. This department is also recognized for Post graduate training in orthopaedics for DNB.

Outpatient Facility

About 120 patients are treated everyday in this facility. A separate block dedicated for screening of patients coming to the hospital for the first time. It screens out non orthopaedic cases and only genuine ortho cases selected and are then worked up in the main OPD and treated. It has so far treated 43340 patients in the unit and the crowd is ever on the increase. Sub speciality clinics like Paediatric ortho, Ilizarov, spine, arthritis and trauma are also conducted on a daily basis.

24 hour Emergency Facility

A 24 hour emergency department, providing has been setup to address emergencies. It has 6 beds and a mini theatre attached to it.

Physiotherapy Unit

The department has a well equipped Physiotherapy department attached to it which has serviced around 27500 patients in just a year and a half.

Inpatient Facility

The department has a 40 bedded ward (separate male and female ward). 1690 patients were admitted and treated. Around 7 admissions per day are made to the ward.

Operating Facility

It has 3 modular Operation Theaters fitted with best equipment. An 8-bedded ICCU is also attached to it. There is already a long list of patients waiting for joint replacements which are done free to patients with no cost even for the prosthesis, operation or hospitalization. Currently 5 major surgeries are done per day, adding up to 2035 surgeries from inception. The surgeries done include sub-specialty surgeries like:

  • Total Joint Replacements
  • Arthroscopic Surgeries
  • Spine
  • Ilizarov
  • Paediatric orthopaedics
  • Complex deformity corrections
  • Acetubular Trauma
