Philosophy of Sai Healthcare

A single hospital will not be able to treat all diseases of all patients. It is a glorious model to demonstrate how medical assistance of a high standard can be provided to humanity totally free of charge. There are no ambiguities and illusions about the symbolic role that this hospital has to play in the world of health and well-being of tomorrow. A single hospital of this size cannot claim that it would treat and cure all the diseases of all patients of heart, kidney, eye and brain. Its role is only to serve as viable working model for making available advanced medical technology free of charge to the deserving patients, who could not otherwise afford it.

It has a clear message for all enshrined in the four guiding principles delineated below:

Globalization of Medicine: To get proper relief from any Medical Institution should be the right of a person irrespective of distinction of country, religion, colour or ideology on global basis.

Decommercialisation of Medicine: The act of healing and giving medical relief to the patients should not be priced and should not be sold in the market as a commodity. The cost of providing such medical care should be absorbed by the society.

Human Values in Medical Care: The agents of Health Care delivery system, be it the Health Administrators, Doctors, Nurses or Technicians, should all be humane in thinking, in words and in deed. They should demonstrate in their work, the five principles of Human Values - Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa.

Spiritual Well Being as a medical Concept: Present day medicine stops at the laying down of health practices and policies to provide physical, mental and psychological health of the individual. It makes little or no attempt at strengthening the spirit of man, which is the divine force in him that energises his physical, mental or psychological systems. Modern medicine has lost its inherent and intrinsic proximity to spirituality. Unless that element is restored Medicine or health care will never be holistic and fully satisfying.

The above principles are translated into action in the following ways:

This super specialities hospital is providing 100% free tertiary care including consultation, diagnostic tests, inpatient treatment with food and medicines, and surgery, with state-of the-art equipment harnessing the latest advances in medical science, to serve all sections of the population, particularly the very indigent who cannot afford treatment and surgery which are very costly.

Over 10% of the inpatients have a monthly income of less than Rs.500 and another 40% earn between Rs.500 and Rs.1,500 per month. Presently in India, access to quality health care, especially tertiary health care, is limited to the wealthy sections of the population, although there is increase in the prevalence of cardio-vascular diseases in all sections of the Indian population.

Community participation and humanisation is achieved by motivating and attracting Seva Dal volunteers, who travel to Prashanthigram at their own cost and provide services at the Hospital, and the staff of the hospital, do their work with a sense of devotion and love and this translates into loving treatment for patients as well.

Spiritual underpinnings are provided by encouraging every patient and his accompanying family to open their hearts and pray for divine support and success of treatment in the awe-inspiring shrine located under the soaring and ornate space of this dome.
